Skaters get your trigger finger ready

November 5, 2010

The drawings are done for the new skate park that’s been in the works for years located along the Schuylkill river trail. The skater kids are going to be so excited to finally have a place to skate that’s a little closer to Center City. Right now the only real skate park is at FDR Park under the I-95 ramp deep in South Philly. Have you seen that place lately? I don’t think there’s one square inch of virgin concrete.

Here are the architect’s drawings of the proposed park:

And here is what it will look like within a week of opening:

Back when I was in middle school our building had a rock out by the road that kids used to paint. It had been there for decades and had layers of paint so thick you couldn’t even make out the original shape of the rock. Over the years the painting spread to the curb, then the road, the trees, and even the building. It got so bad they had to move it to the middle of a giant field so there was nothing around to paint except weeds. Eventually the kids lost interest in it and they yanked it out.

I can see it now. Graffiti kids will be circling the construction site with their spray paint cans shaking madly, eager to be the first to tag it.  Trust me. I realize its not a perfect comparison since this park is located in an utter wasteland, but take a look at the FDR skatepark:

I know I sound like a grumpy old man and I don’t mean to blame the skateboarders. I also really support this park and am excited to see it finished. It’s just that graffiti tends to spread like kudzu, so the trees, benches and even the Art Museum itself will NOT been spared.
