Two Door Cinema Club Penguin Prison Grouplove @ Church in Philly

October 15, 2010

Last night the rain stopped just in time to get out and catch Grouplove, Pengiun Prison and Two Door Cinema Club in the First Unitarian Church basement.
Its definitely the last time anyone in these parts will be able to see all 3 of these great acts in such an intimate setting because I know, next time they visit, it won’t be for a crowd of 400, it’ll be for a crowd of 4,000. And no one will care when I say I saw them when.

LA band Grouplove started the show and their quick set was great.

New York’s Penguin Prison (basically one man named Chris Glover with a backup band) was sandwiched in between and I’m sure he’ll be headlining shows by this time next year. His sound is pure 80s synth-pop ala early Prince, Prefab Sprout and New Order, I’m sure he’s too young to have even heard more than a handful of songs from that era- he’s not trying to sound retro but he does it well. He has the amazing ability to sing both falsetto and base interchangeably.

The stars of the evening- Northern Ireland’s Two Door Cinema Club tore it up. Screw Vampire Weekend, Passion Pit and Phoenix– all similar-sounding bands but all oh-so inferior on all accounts.

They went from one hit song to another from their debut (and only record), stopping only to state that the church basement was the coolest show they played EVER, and they said it more than once. Weird, but cool considering they just played Austin City Limits. Speaking of which, one dude who was snapping pictures (and promised to send me!) saw them there without knowing a thing about them and showed up to the Philly show because they blew him away. I also ran into an Irish dude I know who came out to “show support for” his brethren, thinking he’d be one of only a handful of people in the place. He was happily wrong- the place wasn’t sold out, but close.

You can mark my words- these guys are going to be huge this time next year. The Irish are back bitches!
