Another One: Mr. Malcolm McLaren

April 9, 2010

Malcolm McLaren, the British entrepreneur and musician, died Thursday morning after a battle with cancer. He was 64.

The unique thing about the chameleon-like McLaren is that he founded the Sex Pistols and Bow Wow Wow, then went on to record arguably one of the finest early hip hop albums, Duck Rock in 1983, an album which has withstood the test of time and is one of my favorites not only of that era, but of all time, just behind Tom Tom Club‘s first LP.

Buffalo Gals and Hey, DJ, two hits from him and the World’s Famous Supreme Team, were blasting out of B Boy’s boomboxes from The Bronx to Oakland, unlike, say, the Beastie Boys (who came later) and who didn’t earn nearly the respect of American black youth. Quite a feat for a 30-something white Brit.

Another tidbit about MacLaren that you won’t find on his Wiki page or in his obituary: Remember the “vogue” fad from the late ’80s? I dont’ know if he started it, but most people attribute it to Madonna with her song by the same name. Malcolm McLaren released a vogue song of his own a good 6 months before she did:

    • Great review. I have to admit, I only ever owned the singles, so to this day I’ve never listened to the entire album. I also never knew how much (or how little) McClaren contributed to the album.
