Roots

March 11, 2010
I finally upgraded my blog account and can now upload my stuff directly to WordPress- no need to use the work server or repost other blog’s stuff.
Been digging around the Internet on my lunch break and finding loads of obscure roots reggae that is too good to keep to myself. It’s all 70s and 80s roots and early dancehall stuff. Some are easily available classics stuff; others are rare and hard to find, but all are superb. Gwaan!

One of the sweetest voices in reggae, and still going:

MP3: Sugar Minott-No Vacancy

Used to sing lead vocals in the ’60s rocksteady band The Ethiopians. Later took the name Ethiopian for his solo work. Also still kicking around here and there:

MP3: Ethiopian- Simon

Known mostly for his production work, but a great early dancehall artist too:

MP3: Linval Thompson- Raggamuffin Lover

Known mostly for his hit Cherry Oh Baby in ’71. Yeah, it was his before UB40 had a hit with it in 1983.

MP3: Eric Donaldson- Miserable Woman

MP3: King Kong- Follow Me

From the early ’70s on the Techniques label:

MP3: The Shades- Who You Gonna Run To?
