Thanksgiving sharing

November 14, 2012

It’s been FIVE years since I posted the first Thanksgiving travel tracks. Darng.

Besides Coxsonne Dodd, Jackie Mittoo was the keyboardist and the soul behind all of the Studio 1 tracks. Most of his albums are filled with the same riddims with his organ filling in for the vocals. But here’s a rare, non-reggae funk track that really rips.

From his 1969 LP Keep On Dancing:

MP3: Jackie Mittoo- Juice Box

I’m a week late (to the day) to mention the election, but I’m soo thankful to the state of Wisconsin for pulling through and going blue. To show my thanks, I’m sharing Milwaukee’s little known female hip hop artist SigNif, who’s got quite a large and solid chunk of work on her Bandcamp page.

Check her out and download a track or three to show your gratefulness too.

This one is from 2011′s Embracing Rejection. Her new EP is free.

MP3: SigNif- Like My Style

OK so here’s where I get pressed for time so you’re gonna have to buy these last two if you want ‘em.

Here’s a Nashville act, electro pop band Cherub. Wait for the chorus. Trust me:

Hell I’m all over the map here anyway so let’s end it with some afrobeat from Nigeria:

Sunny Boy

September 27, 2012

The Supremes have so many strong tracks in their catalog its tragic that we only get to hear Baby Love endlessly.
1968:

MP3: Diana Ross & The Supremes- He’s My Sunny Boy

Doesn’t this sound like Mick Jagger?
1973:

MP3: Don Covay- It’s Better To Have (And Don’t Need)

If I’ve told you once I’ve told you a thousand times: You can NEVER have enough cowbell!
Recognize the sample? Here’s the original.
1981:

MP3: Jeanette Lady Day- Come Let Me Love You (Cupcake Project Instrumental Edit)

Ray Darwin‘s People’s Choice still holds the coveted top reggae spot on my iPod. Here’s a close 2nd on the Studio One Ten to One riddim.
~2011:

MP3: Ray Darwin- False Alarm

This was unreleased for some strange reason. Dig dig dig the church organ.
2012:

MP3: Anthony Hamilton- Do It All For You

Stumbled across this label outta Brooklyn with a really strong catalog. Here’s a straight up Afro Funk jam, better than the original. 2012:

Controversy

May 1, 2012

Prince‘s fourth album Controversy was released 30 years ago this year… back when Ronald Reagan was president. Oh how I hated Reagan then, but MAN, today I’d elect him in a second over this new crop of right-wing zealots.

Sorry. Got sidetracked.
1981:

MP3: Prince- Let’s Work

This is brand new from one of my favorite beatsmiths, Leonoard Dstroy. Git it free from Boulder-based Elm And Oak Records. Don’t delay– it’s wonderful:

Jammy

December 1, 2011

Hey I’m back with my 491st post. When I hit 500 maybe we’ll have some sort of “Festivas 500″ party or something. For now I want to share so jammy jams.

This first track is typical King Jammy-produced early dancehall track from Pad Anthony, a stellar dj who didn’t put out much work compared to his contemporaries. This 1985 cut is on the Heavenless/Think Me Did Done Riddim:

MP3: Pad Anthony- Ah Murder
(sorry no preview with this AAC version)

Elephant Man usually crams too many lyrics into too-small a space but he kills it on the new Blaze Fia riddim. Actually all of the artists on this riddim are supurb, esp. Tarrus Riley:

MP3: Elephant Man- Turn Me On

The instrumental side of this rework is killer. Kind of an uptempo dancehall/soca vibe, but no idea who it is. From LA’s DJ Hoff:

MP3: Travis Porter- Make It Rain (Hoff Blend)

Philly Beatmaker Lushlife has a new mixtape which is filled with good samples, including the Beach Boys (!):

Even better samples from Bodega Brovas new EP, including Led Zep, Lykke Li, and The Guess Who!:
