611 Records closes its doors

611.jpgSo another record store loses the battle and closes. I can’t believe 611 lasted as long as it did. Back in the 90s when EVERYONE owned two turntables and a mixer, this place was ground zero. It was always crowded. I’d often have to wait for a turntable to sample the newest arrivals. When I’ve walked by lately its usually almost empty- and I’m guilty of its demise too; I used to buy records there, or Cue, or Sounds of Market EVERY week. Now I don’t know the last CD or album I’ve actually bought. All downloads now. Shame. I can’t begin to explain how important the store is/was on dance music. Here’s a list of just some of the big name DJs that have worked behind the counter at one time or another:
Nigel Richards (owner), Dieselboy(arguably the most famous American drum & bass dj), Willyum, J Smooth, Pete Moss, Carl Michaels, Josh Wink (I don’t think he actually worked there, but was always inside) and many more.

Free Flaming Lips show in Philly

flaming lips at festival pier
Although the evidence is sketchy, it looks like The Flaming Lips are playing a free show at the Festival Pier on Monday, July 16 2007 for a second year in a row. The odd thing is that there’s not much posted about it online. Hmm. Last year’s sponsor, Southern Comfort, has no updated info., Penn’s Landing’s site mentions nothing, and the real kicker is that the Lip’s own site doesn’t say anything about it. Ditto for Bob Mould, who opens, along with De La Soul.

I’ve (gasp) never seen a Flaming Lips show, supposedly the best stage show in alt rock history. Back in college around 1988 they used to play all the time at a tiny club, and the djs at the college radio station used to rave about the shows even then, but I never bothered to go since they always seemed to fall on a Monday… just like this one!

I’ll fill you in if I find anymore info. You do the same.

UPDATE March 2008: THE ABOVE POST WAS INCORRECT, BUT THE FLAMING LIPS ARE COMING TO PENNS LANDING ON MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND 2008 FOR JAM ON THE RIVER. IT’S NOT FREE, BUT THEY’LL BE THERE.

Another fun bike race weekend in Philly

What a good time. Freebies and activities for kids at the Art Museum, then up to Lemon Hill grilling, drinking, dancing, catching up with old friends, and running around barefoot in the grass.

I should post pictures of the actual race, or even some of the modern road bikes being raced but man, these courier bikes are where its at. They sure are gorgeous. I can’t get over how much they’ve changed in the past ten years. More and more people color-coordinates their components nowadays and it looks sweeet.

The Lemon Hill house looks nice, but this Havnoonian and Pinarello are each a piece of art:

All the couriers gather under the same tree every year and Brad spins old school hip hop, disco & funk, and there’s at least 3 kegs. Some of the old dogs show up, but I wish more of them would come around.

There was a good crowd, which the press estimates to be 350,000. I think that’s pushing it a bit, but the Inquirer stated that the crowd on the Wall was as large as it was back in ‘85. Post a comment if you were there this year and previous years and agree with those numbers.

Ghost Monsters on my box!
I rubbed on my first decal today… back when I was a kid you had to wet them and squeegee them nicely. These are peel and press. painless. If I wasn’t going to get beat up for riding a scooter, clearly I will now. (Unless they too love the Ms. Pacman). No room for pinky, but may put (him/her) on the center of my rear fender.

This is an 05 ruckus with a white replacement battery box (the original camo went missing when the scooter was yoinked (the cops did find it).

Craft beer in cans- Its about time.

craft-cans.jpg

From philly.com: Can do- craft-beer makers kicking glass, going metal.

I’m so excited about this. Old Chub and Dale’s Pale Ale from Colorado pretty much started it with their wide distribution, and I’m proud that Sly Fox from here in PA is a close second at least here– I’m not sure how far they’re distributed.

I’ve always felt a lot of guilt buying so much beer in non reusable bottles because it’s such a waste of resources.

From the article:

the latter-day beer can is lined with polymer film, mooting the metallic-taste problem once associated with cans’ welded seams. In the green department, it scores well, too: It’s lighter to transport, takes less energy to chill, recycles like a charm. (Doesn’t cut feet.)

I don’t have research to back me up, but I believe the welded seam=metallic taste info is false. Cans have had a plastic liner since their inception. When I collected cans as a kid I’d always find rusted cans from the 1050s and I could clearly see a film on the inside that would separate from the rusted steel.

Those that argue that beer in cans takes on a metallic taste are getting that flavor (or smell) from the TOP of the can where their lips touch the can. I drink all of my beer out of a glass anyway, so this doesn’t concern me.

The Good Dog has $3 Sly Fox Pheonix Pale Ale cans at all times.

Now can anyone tell me the name of that IPA in the photo so I can get me a case?

UPDATE: DDog found the beer– It’s from 21st Amendment Brewery out of San Fran. Can’t find word on it’s availability on the East coast. Might contact the brewers.
